Why carpet gets dirty

The carpet in a home gets so dirty and worn over time. We track in mud and who knows what else. After a while it may even smell bad. It attracts pet hair or someone may spill something and if you have allergies, dirty carpet will give you a hard time.

Cleaning your carpet

Carpet cleaning can be a very time consuming job but it’s really not that hard. If you can, you could always hire a professional carpet cleaner to come in and do the job for you. It would save you the trouble from doing it and a professional would do a good job. Not everyone wants to hire someone to clean their carpet and that’s fine. If you have a carpet shampooer you’re in luck. If not you could borrow someone’s or maybe even rent one. Before you shampoo the carpet, vacuum it well first. To use a carpet shampooer, add hot water and some laundry detergent or dish soap to the container in the shampooer and follow the instructions for use. You usually have to go slowly over the carpet, especially over the very soiled spots. Your carpet will be damp so turn on some fans to help dry it out. If tou don’t turn on fans, the carpet should dry within a few hours or overnight.

Spot cleaning

If most of your carpet is clean, you can spot clean. There may be a few spots here and there where someone may have spilled something or a pet or your child had an accident. If the stain is fresh, sprinkle baking soda on it. The baking soda will absorb the stain and then you can vacuum it up. You may want to scrub the area with a wet cloth after you vacuum up the baking soda. If the stain has set into the carpet, it would be a good idea to invest in a good quality carpet cleaning spray. Follow the instructions on the bottle for the best results. Sometimes a laundry stain remover will work too. Spray it on the stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes or so. After that, scrub the area with a wet cloth. If you don’t have a stain remover spray, a bowl of hot soapy water just might work. You may have scrub a little harder but it’s worth a try!
